The most useful questions are not simply whether a crack exists, but where it is, how it runs, whether it is changing, whether the two sides are displaced, and whether other symptoms appear nearby.
Crack Patterns That Deserve Attention
Homeowners often become concerned about stair-step masonry cracks, horizontal cracks, widening cracks, displacement across a crack, repeated cracking after cosmetic repair, or cracks that appear together with floor slope and sticking doors. These conditions do not all have the same cause, but they are reasonable reasons to seek a closer look.
Repair the Cause, Not Only the Surface
Filling or sealing a crack can be appropriate in some situations, but a cosmetic treatment is not the same as correcting structural movement. If settlement or another structural condition is driving the crack, the underlying issue should be considered before the visible line is treated as the whole problem.
